Serinhisar is a district of Denizli province. It lies on the 35th kilometre of the Denizli–Antalya highway, north of the Karaağaç Plain. The district has an area of 256 km², and the average altitude of the district centre above sea level is 956 metres. Until 1987 it was a sub-district (bucak) of Acıpayam district under the name Kızılhisar. On that date it gained district status under the name Serinhisar.
The district has many lines of business, but the most important are leblebi (roasted chickpea) production and cattle fattening. Agriculture and trade are also important sources of income. Sales of chickpeas, especially to Middle Eastern countries, have made the district an important exporter.
Kızılhisar has been under the rule of the Hittites, Jonlar-Akarlar, Lydians, Persians, Carians, the Macedonian Empire and the Roman Empire. In AD 395 it remained within the borders of the Eastern Roman Empire. After a battle won by the Anatolian Seljuks in 1077, it came under Seljuk rule until 1308. During the Seljuk period, Turkmens, mostly of the Avşar tribe, settled in the region, and because the region is geographically enclosed, the genetic purity of the population was preserved. In 1429, Germiyanoğlu Yakup Bey handed the Principality of Germiyan to Murad II, definitively bringing the Kızılhisar region under the Ottoman Empire.
The district’s name was changed to Serinhisar by a decision of the municipal council on 1 June 1987. In the district centre, in an area called Çamlık, a festival is held every July. The hisar (fortress) that bore the name Kızılhisar was demolished after 1954. In the town of Yatağan, half of the population earns its living from knife making.
