Çeltik is a district of Konya province. It is 220 km from Konya city centre and is the second most distant district from the provincial centre in Türkiye.

History

The founding of the district goes back to the 11th and 12th centuries. The settlement of Akçaşehir, founded at a place called İbanın Kuyusu near Çeltik, gained district status in 1902. Because of its marshland and mosquito population, the district status was first given to Hatırlı, then transferred to Cihanbeyli, and in 1990 the district was established.

Culture

The population of Gökpınar is made up mostly of Honamlı Yörüks, who originally came from Aydın. The Honamlı belong to the Kayı tribe and were settled at a place called Gökpınar farm in 1948. Gökpınar, the only Yörük town in Türkiye settled by the state, was rewarded by the government for the Honamlı’s important role in the defence of Gaziantep.

The nearby Akçaşehir was a trading centre on the Silk Road at that time. Çeltik town was separated from Yunak district in 1990 and became a district.
