The district is bordered by Kadıköy to the south-west, Üsküdar to the west, Ümraniye to the north, Sancaktepe to the east and Maltepe to the south-east.

History

In 1329, Orhan Gazi conquered the area by defeating the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos III at the Battle of Maltepe. The first settlement, founded in 1335 under the name Tekkebağ Village, was under the rule of Baba and Ali Gazi. In 1872, when the Haydarpaşa–İzmit railway was extended to Bostancı, the area around the new station was named Erenköy. When the connecting roads of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, opened in 1988, passed through the Ataşehir–Kozyatağı area, this area became a prestigious residential and business centre.

Development

The first stage of Ataşehir Housing went on sale in 1993, and in 1995 it was opened to residents in a planned way. After the Marmara Earthquake of 1999, middle and upper-middle income people seeking safer homes began to prefer the Kozyatağı–Ataşehir area.

History and Culture

The first datable settlement in the district was founded in the 14th century. The district of Ataşehir was established by law in 2008. The extension of the railway to Bostancı led to the area being named Erenköy.

Highlights

Ataşehir Municipality was established after the local government elections of 29 March 2009 and began to provide services. The Ataşehir district is known for large residential centres, shopping, culture and arts, and industrial and trade centres as part of urban regeneration.
