The district covers an area of 19 km² and has an average elevation of 37 metres above sea level.
Esenler is bordered by Sultangazi to the north-east, Gaziosmanpaşa, Bayrampaşa and Zeytinburnu to the east, Bağcılar and Başakşehir to the west, and Güngören to the south. In 2009 the district reached its present boundaries when it gave the former Habipler neighbourhood to Sultangazi.
The area is a settlement dating from Byzantine times, and its former names were Litros and Avas. Between 1937 and 1940, Litros-Esenler and Avas-Atışalanı were given Turkish forms. Esenler became a district in 1993 and regained municipality status.
The Atışalanı Water Aqueduct (also known as the Avasköy Aqueduct) is a striking historic structure. The Litros Church of St George was founded in the early 19th century, and after restoration its remains were opened in 2010 as the Adnan Büyükdeniz Digital Library.
Esenler became a district in 1993, after separating from Güngören. In 1969 the people of Esenler applied for a municipality to be established. The oldest inhabitants of the area were Greeks living in the villages of Litros and Avas.
