Sultanbeyli is a district on the Anatolian side of Istanbul province, with an area of 29 km². Its name changed over time from ‘Sultan Beyliği Çiftliği’ (the Sultan’s Beylik Farm) to ‘Sultanbeyli’.

History

The history of Sultanbeyli goes back to the Roman and Byzantine periods. Because of the Aydos ancient city and castle and its strategic position, it was an important stopping point. Sultanbeyli was conquered in 1328 on the orders of Orhan Gazi by an Ottoman army led by Akça Koca, Konur Alp and Abdurrahman Gazi. The conquest was achieved easily, because the daughter of the Byzantine governor (tekfur) surrendered the castle; she married Gazi Rahman (Abdurrahman Gazi), the governor’s son-in-law, showing the tolerant approach of the Ottomans in their expansion. After the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge opened in 1988 and the O-4 Motorway (TEM) passed through Sultanbeyli, the village became attractive and its population grew rapidly. In 1992 it separated from Kartal and was elevated to district status.

History and Culture

The conquest was made easier when the daughter of the tekfur surrendered the castle. A decision to establish a municipality in the village of Sultanbeyli was taken on 31 December 1987. The village became attractive when the O-4 Motorway passed through Sultanbeyli.
