General Information

Pendik is a district and suburb on the Asian side of Istanbul province, with a coastline on the Sea of Marmara, located on the Kocaeli Peninsula. The district covers 190 km², stands 32 metres above sea level and has a population of 752,033.

History

The earliest known name of the district is Pantikapeon, and during the Roman, Byzantine, Eastern Roman and Latin Empires it was known as Pantichion. Although the Macedonians are considered the earliest settlers in Pendik, excavations have uncovered human remains 3,000 to 4,000 years old. After a period under the Seljuks in 1080–1083, and again under the Latin Empire, Pendik came under Ottoman rule in 1306. Left empty until Abdurrahman Gazi settled it during the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid in 1400, Pendik has been a wholly Turkish settlement since then. It became a district on 4 July 1987 and became fully operational on 11 August 1988.

History and Culture

Pendik became a district on 4 July 1987 by Law No. 3392.

  • Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) — A six-minaret mosque built for Ahmed I between 1609 and 1616 by the architect Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa; it is also known as the Blue Mosque because of the more than 20,000 İznik tiles decorating its interior.

  • Süleymaniye Mosque — Built by Mimar Sinan for Suleiman the Magnificent between 1550 and 1557, the mosque stands at the centre of a large complex with madrasas, a hospital, a soup kitchen and tombs; its silhouette on the hill overlooking the Golden Horn is one of the symbols of the city.
  • Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) — One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, made up of more than 60 streets and thousands of shops that grew up around the bedestens built under Mehmed the Conqueror; carpets, jewellery, copperware and leather goods are sold.
